(July 28, 2023) – Today, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) sent a letter to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requesting that donations received by the survivors, victims, and families of the Old National Bank and Chickasaw Park shootings are tax-exempt in accordance with IRS policy. “Our community is still grieving after experiencing two mass shootings in one week,” said Rep. McGarvey. “I’m grateful to the National Compassion Fund for creating the Love for Louisville Old National Bank Survivors Fund and Chickasaw Park Survivors Fund to ensure one hundred percent of donations go directly to survivors, victims, and loved ones in need of support. Anyone impacted by these tragedies should receive these funds as a tax-exempt gift. We can never bring our loved ones back, but we can lend a helping hand as our community continues to heal.” The full text of the letter is below: In April 2023, Louisville, Kentucky, endured two mass shootings – the first at the Louisville Old National Bank and the second, only a matter of days later, in our city’s Chickasaw Park. Seven people were killed in these tragedies, including a 17 year old boy. A number of other people suffered injuries in these attacks, but the people of Louisville have come together in support of the survivors, victims, and their families. While the road to recovery is long and the people of Louisville still grieve, the support from the community has been a source of comfort to us all. In response to this tragedy, the National Compassion Fund has established two funds for the victims, the Love for Louisville Old National Bank Survivors Fund and Love for Louisville Chickasaw Park Survivors Fund. Additional support comes from the Community Foundation of Louisville, who is working with the National Compassion Fund to ensure that one hundred percent of donated funds go directly to the victims. These funds serve to support survivors and their loved ones whose lives have been disrupted by these tragedies. The funds will be provided as a gift to the recipients and, therefore, we request that they be treated as tax-exempt in accordance with IRS policy. To ensure that the National Compassion Fund does not violate any IRS policy in distributing these gifts, we would appreciate your written confirmation indicating that they are aligned with IRS tax policies regarding gifts.
