(February 28, 2024) – Tonight, Congressman McGarvey’s bipartisan bill, The Service-Disabled Veterans Opportunities in Small Business Act, unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill is co-led with Congressman Nick LaLota (NY-01). “As a member of both the Veterans Affairs and Small Business Committees in Congress, it’s an honor to serve those who have put on the uniform and served our country,” said Rep. McGarvey. “We must support our veterans coming out of the military as much as we support them going in, especially those who return with the wounds of their service, both visible and invisible. So many vets come home looking for ways to continue serving their communities, including by starting small businesses, and the Small Business Administration does a great job of connecting veteran and disabled veteran entrepreneurs to critical resources they need to start businesses. But the federal government must do more to ensure all veteran entrepreneurs have the tools and opportunities they need for their new businesses to thrive. I’m proud to introduce this bipartisan bill to ensure we’re delivering on our promise of supporting our disabled veteran entrepreneurs when they leave the military.” The Service-Disabled Veterans Opportunities in Small Business Act would: require the Small Business Administration to issue guidance to better meet contracting goals for Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Businesses; provide training for federal agencies that fail to meet these goals; and, require a report to Congress detailing the agencies that do not meet these goals.
