McKinley, P.E. (R-W.Va.) has nominated 9 students from the First District to the United States service academies. Nomination by a Member of Congress is the first step in the process toward appointment to a military academy.Nominating deserving young people for the opportunity of a lifetime is one of the best parts of my job,McKinley said. West Virginians have always answered the call to serve our nation, and I am confident that these students represent West Virginia's best and brightest. These young men and women will be the next generation of leaders,said McKinley.They have earned their nomination through hard work, achievement and good character, demonstrated in the classroom, the athletic field and their community. I wish them the best of luck with the process. Nominations are based on academic merit, moral character, scholarship, leadership potential, career goals, and motivation. Admittance to any of our nation's service academies is highly competitive, with a limited number of cadets being accepted each year. This nomination is merely one step in the academy application process. The nominated students must now meet the Academy's individual admission requirements in order to receive an Appointment of Appointment. The nominated students are in alphabetical order by last name. Emily Harmon(Wheeling) attends Wheeling Park High School where she is a member of the Technology Science Club. She is a four-year member of the softball team and school marching band.Nominated to U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Naval Academy. Riley Nett(Morgantown) attends University High School where he is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta a mathematics honor society for high school students. He is also a four-year member of the soccer team. Nominated to U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, and West Point. Brent Robinson II(Morgantown) attends Seton Hall University where he is majoring in finance. At Notre Dame High School in Clarksburg, he was member of the National Honor Society, School Club Officer, and the co-founder of the Investment Club.Nominated to U.S. Naval Academy. Rebekah Rowan(Mineral Wells) attends Parkersburg High School and ranks in the top 5% of her class. She is National Honor Society Chapter President and West Virginia Girls State.Nominated to West Point. Xander Shoemake(Ridgley) attends Frankfort High School where he is a member of the Rocketry Club and National Honor Society. He is also a member of the Cumberland Civil Air Patrol and Cadet Commander Civil Air Patrol Squadron MD-065. Xander was awarded the West Virginia Golden Horseshoe and Woodsmen of the World American History Award.Nominated to West Point. Jacob Staud(Morgantown) attends U.S. Military Prep School where he is a member of the wrestling team. At University High School, Jacob was a member of National Honors Society and Mu Alpha Theta a mathematics honor society for high school students.Nominated to West Point. Draeden Taylor(Vienna) attends University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada where he is a member of the Desautels Faculty of Music Program. In high school, Draeden was involved in debate club, Boy Scouts, and chorus.Nominated to U.S. Naval Academy. Abby Turner(Wheeling) attends Wheeling Park High School, where she is in the top 1% of her class. She is member of the National Honor Society, School Orchestra, and a four-year member of the swim team.Nominated to U.S. Air Force Academy. Elizabeth Warner(Morgantown) attends University High School where she is in the top 1% of her class.
