We have talked to parents, teachers, and education officials throughout West Virginia and heard a constant refrain that the current system is broken, said McKinley. They are fed up with one-size-fits-all mandates from Washington, too much reliance on testing, and Common Core being forced on them. While the bill is not perfect, it is a step in the right direction, said McKinley. It reduces the federal role in education and empowers parents to make choices for their kids. Voting against this would have meant endorsing the status quo, which is clearly not working, said McKinley. Our kids and grandkids are falling behind and the system is failing them. Today the House took a step in the right direction to say no to Common Core and yes to more local control. Rep.
