McKinley, P.E. issued the following statement on the agreement reached by the UMWA, Peabody and Patriot Coal to fund health care benefits for retirees and help Patriot Coal emerge from bankruptcy. The agreement reached by the UMWA, Peabody and Patriot is an important step in guaranteeing health care benefits to retirees and protecting the jobs of thousands of miners and the viability of Patriot Coal. These retired miners worked to earn the benefits over many years and its only fair their families have certainty about the future. This settlement will accomplish that. At the same time the longer term issues with funding health care and pension benefits still need to be addressed. We have offered a bipartisan bill; the Coal Healthcare and Pensions Protection Act (H.R. 2918), to help ensure these men and women receive the benefits they deserve.
