David B. McKinley, P.E. (R-W.Va.) participated in a press conference in support of his bipartisan legislation to keep and protect U.S. jobs from being shipped overseas, by ensuring taxpayer dollars don't go to companies who outsource call center jobs. This is not a Republican or Democratic issue, but a common sense issue that protects and creates jobs, said Rep. McKinley. Simply put, if you ship jobs overseas companies should not get taxpayer dollars or any type of funding from the government. Over the past five years nearly 500,000 American call center jobs have been lost across the country, said McKinley. This has touched close to home here in the First District with the recent layoffs of hundreds at the Teletech facility in Moundsville. We need to prevent these closures from happening while incentivizing companies to bring jobs back to America. Under this legislation, companies that send U.S. call center jobs overseas would be barred from receiving federal loans, grants or subsidies. The bill also requires that a list of companies that send call center jobs off shore be made available to the public and addresses data security issues that leave Americans' personal information at risk. There are numerous examples where foreign call center employees have stolen personal information including bank accounts and health records and sold it on the black market, added McKinley. This is bad for consumers and it is bad for the businesses, but this risk can be avoided by simply choosing to locate here in America. Rep. McKinley and Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY) co-sponsored the bipartisan U.S. Call Center and Worker Protection Act of 2013 in August. Today, they were joined by Senator Robert Casey (D-PA) to formally present the bipartisan legislation to members of the media.
