Meadows Votes to Support CHIP Program in Continuing Resolution Washington, D.C.- On Thursday, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) voted in favor of a continuing resolution to fund the government through January 19th, 2018, and extending funding for CHIP. Among several important priorities, the bill reauthorizes funding for Community Health Centers and the Childrens Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a health insurance program for low-income children, for five years. CHIP covers children in low-income families under Medicaid, even if their parents dont qualify for the state-federal health insurance program themselves. It has enjoyed largely bipartisan support since it was enacted in 1997 and covers about 8 million U.S. children, according to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. This is the second time in the 115th Congress in which Rep. Meadows supported a reauthorization of funding for CHIPthe other being his vote on November 3, 2017, when he support H.R.3922, the CHAMPIONING HEALTHY KIDS Act. While I wish Congress had addressed the governments spending deadline far earlier than this Holiday-deadline, passing this bill allows Congress to help President Trump keep his promise to the American people to ensure tax cuts are delivered in time for Christmas. It also provides much-needed funding to Community Health Centers and the Child Health Insurance Program, making sure health care services like routine doctors visits will be taken care of for those most in need. Furthermore, it provides resources to address an unanticipated funding shortfall in the Veterans Choice Program so that veterans may continue to receive the healthcare within their community that they choose.
