Luke Messer (IN-06) today voted in favor of  the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which lowers taxes on middle-class Hoosiers and overhauls America’s tax code for the first time in 31 years. Messer spoke in support of the bill shortly before it was voted on and passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. “Today is a huge victory for working Americans. The tax cut plan the House passed will deliver more jobs, fairer taxes and a bigger paychecks for Hoosier families,” Messer said. “This tax cut will let Indiana’s families keep more of their hard-earned money, and make it a little easier to raise their children, buy a home and save for their future. Now, the U.S. Senate needs to act, prove to the American people it can get something done, and keep its promise to Hoosiers." The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act simplifies the tax code and lowers tax rates across the board for individuals, families and job creators. The plan increases the Child Tax Credit from $1,000 to $1,600, a 60 percent increase. Additionally, the legislation roughly doubles the amount of money protected from taxes by increasing the standard deduction. It also preserves the adoption tax credit and the home mortgage interest deduction. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates the plan will lead to more than 20,000 new jobs in Indiana and will increase after-tax income for middle-class Hoosier families by more than $2,400. Messer’s legislation eliminating tax credits for illegal immigrants is also included in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. It ensures that only taxpayers with a Social Security Number that is valid for work can claim the Child Tax Credit. VIDEO of Rep. Messer speaking on the House floor today urging support for the tax cut plan can be found HERE and below: 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
