https://mikebishop.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=203 Bishop Votes to Give Tax Relief to Michigan Families 2017-12-19 2017 2017-12 Republican House MI Mike Bishop B001293 mikebishop.house.gov     legacy WASHINGTON Today, Congressman Mike Bishop, Michigans Republican member of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, released the following statement after the House passed the conference report for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (H.R. 1), the House plan to provide tax relief to millions of hardworking families and create more jobs, fairer taxes and bigger paychecks. Finally, after 31 years of stagnant growth, the House took historic action to pass the conference report for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This bill delivers real relief to hardworking families at every income level in Michigan and across the nation. We are doubling the standard deduction, doubling the child tax credit, expanding the medical expense deduction, and preserving higher education tax relief for our students. Just consider the typical family of four in Michigans Eighth Congressional District earning $90,000. Under this bill, if that family takes the standard deduction, as most do, they will see a tax cut of approximately $1,700. For families across Michigan, thats real money towards savings for a childs education or money on a car payment. Im pleased to report that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed today ensures that our students will still be able to receive tuition waivers tax-free and can continue to deduct the interest paid on student loans. Today we are delivering meaningful reforms that empower families to save and plan for their future. Bishop delivered a speech on the House floor in support of the tax reform legislation. A transcript of his speech can be found below. Congressman Bishop said, Thank you Mr. Speaker. I rise in support of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act today. At its core, reforming our nations tax code is about how we, the policy-makers, view the role of government in our economy and society. Over the past 10 years the American people have seen a stagnant economy and a steady decline in the labor force participation. Meanwhile, the government has grown to an unprecedented level, the economy has slowed and our debt has nearly tripled, all the while government has given away sweetheart deals to select companies leaving main street job providers to hold the bag. But all that ends today. Today, we reduced the burden on job creators and families, and today we create an environment that will generate real economic growth. The conference committee report before us today is about our constituents about allowing our constituents and neighbors to keep more of their hard earned money. For starters, we double the standard deduction. Which means for joint filers the first $24,000 of their income is free from federal income tax liability. Thats real money back in the pockets of working class families across America. The plan expands the Child Tax Credit to $2,000 per child to help families with the cost of raising children. For students struggling with debt the bill preserves the student loan interest deduction and graduate student will continue to receive tuition waivers tax free. Mr. Speaker, I thank you and I yield back. BACKGROUND: With this bill, the typical family of four earning the median family income of $73,000 will receive a tax cut of $2,059. Expands the Child Tax Credit from $1,000 to $2,000 for single filers and married couples to help parents with the cost of raising children. A list of the many policy highlights of our bill.
