Sergeant Donald Burgett, an Army paratrooper, participated in the opening operations of the Normandy Invasion with A Company, 506th Parachute Infantry of the 101st Airborne Division. The bill passed the House on September 13, 2018 and now heads to the president for signature. We owe our freedoms to the sacrifices of individuals like Sergeant Donald Burgett of Howell, Michigan, and I'm proud this legislation is one step closer to becoming law, said Rep. Bishop. It is my hope that naming this Post Office after Mr. Burgett will serve as a lasting tribute and honor the memory of this incredible Michigander for future generations." Sergeant Donald Burgett was a member of the 101st Airborne, A Company, and he fought throughout the European theatre, including Normandy on D-Day, the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden, and Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Sergeant Burgett returned to the United States and lived almost his entire adult life in Howell, Michigan. He published four books, including Currahee! A Screaming Eagle at Normandy, published in 1967 and endorsed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In addition to his writing, he was also an active member of several veterans' organizations including the VFW, American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a local builder and loved spending time outdoors.
