This legislation would support small and local newspapers by creating tax incentives for individuals and businesses to subscribe to and advertise in local papers. “Over the past several years, we have seen local small-town newspapers across the country facing difficult financial decisions. Even before the pandemic, many outlets were forced to cut pay, let staff go, close their doors, or sell to large corporations,” said Miller-Meeks. “From Lamoni to Goose Lake to Montrose, local newspapers across the Second District provide the up-to-date information and news that our communities care about. This decline in the number of local newspapers is an unfortunate trend, and I am confident that my Subscribe to Local News Act will provide much-needed support.” To read the full text of this legislation, click HERE. Background: The number of local news outlets has rapidly declined due to an industry-wide transition to digital media and the pandemic-induced economic recession. In response to these trends, the Subscribe to Local News Act would create a $200 tax credit for individuals to subscribe to small local newspapers with a daily circulation of fewer than 10,000 subscribers. The legislation would also create a $1,000 deduction for businesses to donate to or advertise in small local newspapers.
