Since coming to Congress, I have been working with my Transportation and Infrastructure Committee colleagues to update and reform the Federal Aviation Administration. President Trump's signing of theFAA Reauthorization Acttoday ensures lasting stability for our country's aviation sector, while improving aviation safety, enhancing the passenger experience, encouraging innovation, and cutting red tape to allow American aviation to grow and stay competitive, said Mitchell. I am pleased two of my amendments were included in the bill. My amendments will ensure that the American aviation industry continues modernizing and tests adoption of new Air Traffic Control technology which will bring much needed improvements to airline travel safety, efficiency, and customer experience. This bill becoming law is a great example of Congress working together to get very important legislation done in a bipartisan manner. Congressman Mitchell had two amendments included in the final version of the bill, both of which aim to ensure Air Traffic Control modernization efforts commonly known as NextGen stay on track. One amendmentwould create a pilot program for airports and airplanes that already have the latest technology; this pilot program would demonstrate what a fully modernized Air Traffic Control system could look like. (Sec. 547 of the final bill) The second amendmentwould require the DOT Inspector General to examine and report on what a partial or failed implementation of full NextGen technology, and what that would look like for the flying public, air carriers, and taxpayers.
