The legislation authorizes the construction of a second 1,200-foot lock at theSoo Locks, a key priority for Michigan. Inclusion of the authorizationfollows an Army Corps report in Junethat urged the building of a second lock because ofthe Soo Locks' strategic value and vital importance to America's economy and national security. The constructionof a new Soo Lock has the support of President Donald Trump,who backed theproject during a visit to Michiganin April, after meeting with Congressman Mitchell and other members during a visit to Michigan in April. The construction of a second 1,200-foot lock at the Soo Locks became even more viable today with the signing of this bill into law by President Trump. I'm proud that through teamwork and persistence, we are finally seeing movement forward on this essential project to improve the locks. Any failure at the Soo Locks would have a devastating ripple effect on our nation's economy and national security.
