Laws that prohibit scam artists from spoofing telephone numbers on telephone calls are already on the books. The legislation passed this week makes it a crime to spoof telephone numbers on text messages. Congressman John Moolenaar (R-Midland) voted for the legislation. "It is important to update our laws as technology changes. This modernized law will ensure that criminals who use text messages to steal from the vulnerable will be fully prosecuted under the law," said Moolenaar.  The legislation passed the House on an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote and it now goes to the Senate. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
