Frank J. Mrvan, Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Technology Modernization, that aims to improve the management of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) project. In the past year, the VA Office of the Inspector General has found that VA is not conducting reliable and complete cost estimates for infrastructure upgrades and costs under the EHRM program. To improve accountability and transparency of this program, Rep. Mrvan introduced H.R. 4951, the VA Electronic Health Record Transparency Act of 2021. This legislation will require VA to provide Congress with quarterly reports that assess the full costs, performance metrics, and outcomes. Rep. Mrvan stated, “I thank Chairman Takano and Ranking Member Bost for their leadership and support of this legislation, as well as the cosponsors and support from other Members who have made this legislation truly a bipartisan initiative. Our veterans deserve the best care and services available, and the American taxpayer deserves to know that Congress is providing careful oversight of the EHRM program and its costs. I encourage my Senate colleagues to pass this legislation as soon as possible, so we can provide VA with the appropriate direction to improve this program and ensure all veterans can access their earned care and benefits.” The House approved Rep. Mrvan’s legislation by a voice vote. The legislation is now referred to the Senate for consideration.
