Debbie Mucarsel-Powell(FL-26)applauded bipartisan House passage of her amendment toH.R. 729, the Coastal and Great Lakes Communities Enhancement Act.H.R. 729 creates a federal grant program under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to assist states, local governments, and non-governmental organizations in the construction of living shorelines. Rep. Mucarsel-Powell's amendment ensures that coral reefs are eligible for these grants. Coral reefs have a tremendous amount of biodiversity that is unparalleled under the surface. They are the rainforest of the ocean and they are essential for our tourism industry and for our fishing industry both recreational and commercial,said Mucarsel-Powell. With this amendment, we will be taking an important step forward in our efforts to protect and restore our reefs.
