Dan Newhouse (R-WA) was presented with the Hero of Main Street award on behalf of the National Retail Federation and Washington Retailer's Association for his support of legislation critical to U.S. retail, including trade, health care reform, and tax reform. I am honored to receive this award, and I will continue to support policies to grow small businesses that are the backbone of the American economy, said Rep. Newhouse. As a third-generation farmer, I have firsthand experience with the challenges and opportunities that come with running a small business. In many cases, simply reducing excessive regulations and cutting red tape can give small businesses the opportunity to do what they do best: create jobs and grow the economy. In Washington, 40 percent of our jobs are either directly created or supported by international trade, and reducing barriers to trade will continue to be a top priority of mine in Congress. The 'Heroes of Main Street' awards were created by the National Retail Federation (NRF) in 2013 to recognize Members of Congress for outstanding support of the retail industry's public policy priorities. These 'heroes' have publicly supported policies and initiatives - defined by NRF - that recognize the important contributions of the retail industry, and have worked to encourage a vibrant, sustained and healthy retail sector.Retail is the nations largest private sector employer, supporting one in four U.S. jobs 42 million working Americans and contributing $2.6 trillion to annual GDP, according to NRF. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
