This announcement follows the letter sent to the VA in October by Rep. Nolan and ranking Member on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee Tim Walz, which requested an update on the implementation of the rollout of the Veteran’s Identification Card program. This rollout is mandated through the Veteran’s Identification Card Act of 2015, which aims to make it easier for all Veterans to identify themselves to retailers and others. Prior to the enactment of this law, a Veteran who had served a minimum obligated time in service, but who did not meet the retirement or medical discharge threshold, was ineligible to receive an ID. “Veterans deserve recognition and a simple way to identify themselves without carrying around discharge paperwork. I am pleased to see that the VA is making good on its long-overdue promise,” said Nolan. “However, I am aware that the VA’s application website may be currently overloaded due to the high volume of traffic. I will continue to closely monitor the online application process to ensure it runs smoothly and that all deserving Veterans receive their identification cards in a timely manner. I will also work to ensure that Veterans lacking Internet access have an alternate means to register.” To request a VIC, Veterans must visit vets.gov, click on “Apply for Printed Veteran ID Card” on the bottom left of the page and sign in or create an account.
