| https://nolan.house.gov/the-monday-report/its-a-scam | It's a scam! | 2017-11-20 | 2017 | 2017-11 | Democrat | House | MN | Rick Nolan | N000127 | nolan.house.gov | legacy | GOP Passes Tax Scam Bill to Raise Taxes on the Middle Class, Cut Taxes for the Super-Rich, and Explode the Deficit As these protestors in front of the U.S. Capitol pointed out last week, the GOP tax scam raises taxes on the middle class, hands the super-rich and big corporations an enormous tax cut, explodes the deficit, and paves the way for drastic cuts in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Dear Friend, House Republicans last week passed their phony and dangerous tax scam – a measure thatraises taxes on millions of middle class working families, hands the super-rich and big corporations a $1.5 trillion dollar tax cut, and requires a massive increase in the debt our children and grandchildren will have to pay. This is easily the most egregious tax bill ever perpetrated on the middle class, seniors, students and those in need. In fact, a recent analysis by the New York Times concludes that this measure would raise taxes on nearly half of all middle class families by 2026. About one third of middle class families would begin paying higher taxes in 2018. And according to the bipartisan Joint Economic Committee, some 73 million taxpayers with incomes between $10,000 and $50,000 would collectively pay $2.9 billion more in individual income taxes beginning in 2027. Moreover, this Republican boondoggle sets the stage for massive cuts in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid to pay for a plan that gives 80% of tax relief to the richest one-percent of Americans – millionaires, billionaires, and multi-national corporations that send good-paying jobs overseas. That’s one big reason why AARP and the National Committee to Preserve and Protect Medicare – two of the Nation’s strongest advocates for seniors – have registered their strong opposition to this Republican measure. Furthermore, while the rich get richer at rates unprecedented, taxpayers would lose their student loan interest deductions, people with expensive chronic medical conditions like cancer and diabetes would lose their medical deductions, and taxpayers would no longer be able to deduct their state and local property taxes. Even the modest deductions families receive for adopting a child would be lost under this Republican plan. The tax debate now moves to the U.S. Senate, and rest assured I will be working with my colleagues to achieve real tax reform. Real tax reform benefits the middle class, forces the rich and big corporations to pay their fair share, and prevents a massive increase in the deficit that our children and grandchildren would be forced to pay. We will keep you posted as events proceed. Meanwhile, I want to hear your thoughts. Feel free to contact any of our offices listed below or send me an email.
