As a member of the Bipartisan Task Force to End Sexual Violence and the Bipartisan Working Group to End Domestic Violence, I am working with like-minded lawmakers to fulfill our moral obligation to survivors of violence, said O'Halleran. I am pleased to see the Department of Justice stepping up and providing much-needed funds for tribal programs in Arizona that assist survivors of sexual and domestic violence. The Yavapai-Apache and Havasupai Tribal Governments Programs are designed to decrease incidences of violent crime against Native American women and to recognize tribal sovereignty by strengthening the capacity of tribes and nations to exercise authority to respond to violent crimes. Recently, I introduced two bills that would protect and strengthen survivors' rights and expand them where they are most needed, continued O'Halleran. The work is far from over, and Congress must pass bipartisan legislation that protects survivors on tribal lands. O'Halleran introduced the bipartisan Native Youth and Tribal Officer Protection Act and HEALS Act to expand survivor protections to children and law enforcement involved in domestic violence and sexual assault cases, and to create confidential housing assistance programs for survivors in need. O'Halleran is also a cosponsor of the Violence Against Women Act.
