As a former police officer, Idedicatedmy career to working to protect and save lives. The goals of good governance are the same: serving and protecting the people we represent to the best of our abilities. This, however, isnotthe reality that Americans have endured this year. This administration and Senate leadership continue to withhold passage of a new COVID aid package, leaving Arizona families, businesses, and frontline workers to rely on the benefits they received all the way back in May, many of which have run out, including some that ended before August. In all, millions of Americans have been seriously impacted by the health effects of COVID-19, and, according torecent data fromthe National Institute of Health, 'up to 60% of people who contract COVID-19 will have long-term heartdamage, whether or not they experienced any symptoms.' These numbers and scientific discoveries are serious. Senate leadership, though, has not taken this seriously. The Senate Majority Leader confessed he wanted to wait until after the election to look at an aid package. In other words, he played politics at the risk of Americans' lives and livelihoods. Earlier this year, the House passed multiple bills to protect American lives, but they sit in the Senate. There is no reason for Americans to wait six months and counting to address this much-needed aid. During this time, millions of our fellow citizens have contracted this disease, over 167,000 have died, families have been devastated, our economy is still at risk, and our health care system is starting to become overwhelmed again as cases quickly rise. All of this and more because of the Senate leadership's declared decision that put politics above people. The Senate and administration need to proceed without delay to aid our fellow citizens.
