I always value the opportunity to hear directly from President Nez as we work to understand what federal assistance and resources are needed to support families on Navajo, especially as the coronavirus pandemic continues to hit Navajo communities hard, said O'Halleran. I was glad to be able to lend a hand in distributing supplies to help keep Navajo families safe, and I look forward to continuing to work with President Nez to make the voices of tribal communities heard in Washington. This year, O'Halleran introduced legislation that would extend the deadline by which tribal governments must spend funds allocated under the CARES Act from December 30, 2020 to December 30, 2022. The CARES Act, signed into law in March, allocates: $150 billion for state, local, and tribal governments, with $8 billion dedicated specifically to Tribes; $69 million for response needs at Bureau of Indian Education-funded schools; $1.032 billion in critical resources to support the Indian Health Service and Tribal health systems; and $150 million per year (through November 30, 2020) for the Special Diabetes Program for Indians, an initiative O'Halleran has re-introduced legislation to secure.
