Tonight is the eighth night of Hanukkah, when countless American families will gather together to light their menorahs and remember the Macabees, Jewish fighters in the second century B.C.E who stood bravely in defense their faith. The story of the Macabees is not dissimilar to pilgrims who came to North America in search of their own religious freedoms. If we hope to preserve our nation as a place within which hardworking families of all backgrounds can practice the faith they choose without fear, we cannot allow these crimes to go unpunished. This year, our American Jewish community has endured far too many acts of violence, terror, hate, and ignorance. I stand today with my Jewish friends and colleagues and demand that enough is enough.
