This contest provides a valuable opportunity for middle and high schoolers to develop their skills in computer coding, math, science, and related subjects by creating an original application. The winning student attends Hoover High School, and his website project, titled “Alabama Food Deserts Project” acts to raise awareness about food deserts across Alabama, and to provide tools to help those living in scarcity. “I'm thoroughly impressed with Ryan’s creation for the App Challenge,” Palmer said. “He has made a valuable tool for community leaders and those desiring to help people in difficult circumstances. His creation also showcases innovation and user-friendliness. STEM skills are increasingly important in today’s work and academic environments, and this app indicates that Ryan will go far. He should be proud of his hard work.” Alabama Food Deserts Project is designed to show the user where there are food deserts across the state and provide ways to promote community help for these areas. Application submissions were judged by Mr. Steven Puckett and Dr. Shane Banks of the University of North Alabama.
