Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-03) released the following statement after legislation he authored, the Dont Tax Our Fallen Public Safety Heroes Act, was signed into law by the President. The legislationclarifies federal law to make sure that both federal and state benefits for fallen public safety officers are not subject to federal income tax. Our hearts go out to the family members of all the police officers, firefighters, and EMTs that have given their lives in the line of duty, said Paulsen. These heroes paid the ultimate sacrifice keeping their communities safe, and there is nothing in the world that can replace the loss of a loved one. However, we can ensure that these families receive the full benefits promised in the event of an unthinkable tragedy and this legislation makes sure of that. Paulsen is a member of the House Law Enforcement Caucus and has been a strong advocate for issues affecting police, firefighters, and EMTs. In addition, he has worked with Minnesota law enforcement to combat the crime of sex trafficking.
