The full text of the letter is below: August 24, 2016 Ms. Heather Bresch Chief Executive Officer Mylan 1000 Mylan Boulevard Canonsburg, PA 15317 Dear Ms. Bresch: I am writing to express my concerns regarding recent price increases for Mylan’s EpiPen Auto-Injector. As Co-Chair of the House Medical Technology Caucus and a champion of innovation, I recognize the power that medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and biologics can have on improving patient outcomes and lowering health care costs. Epinephrine autoinjectors are an important, life-saving technology that help thousands of people, in particular children, combat anaphylactic allergic reactions. Parents and doctors recognize the importance of this technology because they know that without access to it, there would be countless preventable deaths. I have heard from numerous residents in Minnesota that recent price increases for an EpiPen could result in them losing access to this life-saving technology. Several news reports indicate that the price for generic manufacturer Mylan’s auto-injector has increased by 400% since 2008 to a cost of over $500. For parents that have to buy multiple EpiPens every year, this price increase could make it prohibitively expensive to ensure their child has access to the device. While I recognize that it takes billions of dollars in research and development to create innovative drugs and medical technology, this must be balanced with the need to ensure patient access to life-saving technology. Competition in the market is an essential component of ensuring lower costs. I am concerned that Mylan’s price increase reflects an attempt to take advantage of a lack of competition, due to a recall of its main competitor in the marketplace. I respectfully request that you address the concerns raised by my constituents regarding the significant price increase for the EpiPen Auto-Injector. I further ask that you share with me the resources and assistance available to my constituents who may be unable to pay for and access this life-saving technology. I appreciate your timely response to this request.
