Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. issued the following statement about his support for the Restoring Tax Fairness for States and Localities Act (H.R. 5377). This bill would increase the state and local tax deduction (or SALT) for families from $10,000 to $20,000. I voted for this bill because it will provide significant tax relief to working class Americans, said Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. The average SALT deduction in my district was $17,000 last year. Instead of paying $7,000 in taxes, they get that money back and an additional $3,000 in deductions. In addition, it will increase the deductions available to teachers and first responders.
