Yesterday, the Trump administration released its School Safety Commission Report. The Commission Report ignores evidence-based violence prevention strategies and would roll back anti-discrimination educational policies. Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. (D-NJ), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security's Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Communications, and Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), incoming Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security issued the following statement: The Trump administration's Federal School Safety Commission Report is an assault on civil rights that ignores evidence-based reality in order to advance an extremist agenda, said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. There is a commonality among the mass shootings in American schoolseasy access to firearms. Rather than address the root cause of school shootings, the Trump administration provide recommendations for putting guns in classrooms, as if teachers are security guards and schools are prisons. Nobody thinks that's a good idea except for the NRA. Make no mistake, the administration's proposal will endanger students. Said Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, The Commission's findings are disappointing. The Trump Administration's report does not reflect the sense of urgency needed to address the growing threat of lethal violence in our nation's schools. It is clear that the leadership on this issue is missing in the Executive Branch. Therefore, it is up to Congress to conduct legislative action and Congressional oversight.
