(July 24, 2017) The House of Representatives today voted on legislation to improve the quality of life for our nation’s veterans. Congressman Steve Pearce released the following statement after voting to pass these bills: “American veterans and their families have sacrificed so much to defend our freedoms and preserve democracy. It is important that we honor our commitments. Unfortunately, for too long our nation has taken advantage of our veterans and failed to provide them with the service they need and deserve. Congress must be working together to correct the egregious violations and service within the VA that has come to light in recent years. Men and women who have served, and especially those serving now, need to know that when they come home, there is a system that is going to be there for them. I stand by my commitment to be there for our veterans, and will continue fighting so that they have the opportunities they deserve after sacrificing so much for the future of our nation.” Background H.R. 3218, the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017, extends GI Bill benefits granted to veterans, dependents and surviving spouses. This bill expands veterans’ access to education and workforce programs, by ending the 15-year “use it or lose it” restriction. It allows eligible recipients to use their GI Bill benefits throughout their entire lives.
