(November 7, 2017) Congressman Steve Pearce sponsored an amendment that passed last week along with H.R. 2936, the Resilient Federal Forests Act of 2017. The bill works to prevent catastrophic wildfires and improve the health of forests. This year’s devastating wildfire season has already burned nearly 8,000 homes and cost upwards of $3 billion dollars in fire suppression efforts. H.R. 2936 streamlines the management of federal forests to reduce the risk of wildfires, and shortens the environmental review process and reduce bureaucratic regulations that increase time and costs of forest management. Rep. Pearce states, “the best way to revitalize our nation’s forests while preserving their ecosystems is through the creation of restoration projects that will return them to a healthy density. My amendment creates a pilot project in New Mexico to advance these projects forward in an efficient timeframe. The sooner these restorations efforts begin, the sooner we can begin avoiding catastrophic events that damage the safety and future of New Mexico families and businesses.” Support for H.R. 2936 and Rep. Pearce’s amendment is rolling in from local officials and leaders: “I acknowledge the long-standing support and hard work of Steve Pearce to better New Mexico. Historically Pearce has always looked after the resources found in our national forest by supporting forest management initiatives such as H.R. 2936 that will promote forest restoration, prevention of forest fires, and the creation of jobs. We can always count on Congressman Pearce to do what is right for New Mexico,” stated City of Grants Mayor Martin “Modey” Hicks. “What we hope to see in the future is increased forest management for forest health, forest resilience and wildfire mitigation but also give our members work and jobs and access to the raw materials we use to make products. NMFIA supports every opportunity for our members to actively increase watershed treatments on the national forest,” stated Brent Racher, President of the New Mexico Forest Industry Association. “As you all know, New Mexico has been subject to catastrophic wildfires. This amendment offered by Mr. Pearce will head us in the in the right direction in properly maintain our forests for future generation, benefit the watershed, benefit wildlife and preserve our historic sites. I as a citizen of New Mexico, Cibola County, and as the Point of Contact for the Cibola National Forest Landscape Team, as well as the Facilitator of the Mount Taylor/Zuni Mountain Forest Service Collaborative, I want to offer my support of such legislation,” stated Les Gaines, Assistant City Manager, Grants County. “Anyone that lives in Cibola County and loves the magnificent Mt.
