(December 8, 2017) Congressman Steve Pearce today announced that Jenna McClellan of Centennial High School in Las Cruces, New Mexico is the winner of the 2017 Congressional App Challenge for the Second Congressional District of New Mexico: “I congratulate Jenna on being our winner of this year’s Congressional App Challenge. This competition is a wonderful way to empower the youth in our communities to engage in STEM education. New Mexico is home to some of the nation’s premier STEM research and development facilities. As a State, we must continue to do all we can to assist and encourage the next generation to continue to lead in these fields.” Background Jenna McClellan created a mobile app called ‘The Allergen Cookbook.’ The Allergen Cookbook is designed to simplify the cooking process of those inflicted with food allergies by allowing them to store and search recipes by allergen. Nearly thirteen million Americans are hindered by a food allergy, and this app seeks to make food allergies more manageable for individuals. Learn more about Jenna’s app here. The 2017 Congressional App Challenge is an annual competition to encourage students to get involved in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities. Students will compete by creating and exhibiting a software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet or computer devices.
