(May 8, 2018) Congressman Steve Pearce released the following statement after President Trump announced the United States will formally withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or Iran Deal: From the beginning, the Iran Deal was dangerous. It acted against the interest of national security and sacrificed American principles for a temporary gain. Despite the agreement in place, Iran continues to openly fund and assist terrorism, perpetuate human rights abuses, grow its ballistic missile programs, and intervene in Syria without any repercussions. Iran continues to have complete control over access to its military installations, preventing US and UN inspectors from having any idea of the actual nuclear research and development taking place in the country. This is the only denuclearization initiative in history that has allowed such an opaque and arbitrary provision. With that said, I support the Presidents action today to withdraw from the Iran Deal. We cannot in good faith sit back and enable the worlds leading sponsor of terrorism to continue their illicit activities.
