(September 28, 2017) Congressman Steve Pearce today released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted and passed H.R. 3823, the Disaster Tax Relief and Airport and Airway Extension Act, to provide disaster relief funding through tax provisions for people and families affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, and to provide a 6-month extension for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA): “As a pilot, I’ve time and again seen how the flaws entwined in the management and operations at the FAA have hindered efficiency and effectiveness. Congress has been working diligently to reform processes so that the FAA has the resources to improve infrastructure and the air traffic control system. Today’s bill extends the FAA’s funding for 6-months to provide the necessary time to accomplish the goal of cutting government red tape to bring the FAA into the 21st Century. I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress and the aviation industry to support air safety regulations and transportation opportunities that provide millions of jobs to people in New Mexico and across the nation,” stated Rep. Pearce. Rep. Pearce continued to state, “today’s bill also helps the recovery efforts for communities recently devastated by Hurricanes that left people and families without their homes, cars, and other personal possessions. Many people are having to turn to their retirement funds as their only source of available money to replace and rebuild what they’ve lost. Now is not the time for politics, but time for our nation to come together to help people and families get back on their feet as they go through this distressful time.” H.R. 3823 extends the authorization of the FAA through March 31, 2018. It also provides emergency funding for people affected by hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria through tax credits and deductions.
