Seven years ago, our nation took a strong, long-overdue step toward honoring the service of our nations heroes by repealing the discriminatory Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy. In relegating this shameful policy to the dustbin of history, we reaffirmed the core American principle that anyone willing and able to serve and defend this country be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of who they are or whom they love. Americas military is strongest when it fully reflects our countrys diversity and ideals. The Trump Administrations cruel attacks against our brave transgender servicemembers is a misguided decision fueled by prejudice, not the interests of national security. The White Houses hateful agenda serves only to weaken our military and the nation it defends. Today, Democrats celebrate the extraordinary advancements made to secure the equality of all LGBT citizens. Yet, more work remains to be done to fully repeal the stain of Dont Ask, Dont Tell and to ensure transgender troops are allowed to serve freely and openly.
