U.S. Representative Greg Pence (R-IN-06) today released the following statement after announcing China has officially lifted the nearly 4-year long ban on U.S. turkey exports, in a huge victory for turkey farmers in Indiana. President Trump's revolutionary approach to trade with China is putting America first, and our farmers are seeing results, said Congressman Pence. Under the previous administration, China instituted a ban on all poultry imports, hurting Hoosier turkey producers. The ability to re-enter the Chinese market is a tremendous victory for our farmers here in Indiana's 6th district and beyond. Indiana is the fourth largest turkey producing state in the nation, with over 20 million turkeys raised annually. Turkey consumption has more than doubled in the U.S. and abroad since 1970, with 630 million pounds of Turkey exported in 2018 alone. Hoosier turkey and poultry farmers are a cornerstone of Indiana's economy. Pence highlighted the ban in a recent letter to United States Trade Representative Ambassador Lighthizer and urged continued support on behalf of Hoosier farmers in pushing back against bad Chinese trade tactics.
