https://perlmutter.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=991 Udall, Perlmutter Welcome Federal Advisory Board's Decision to Ease Ability for Rocky Flats Workers to Access Benefits 2013-10-18 2013 2013-10 Democrat House CO Ed Perlmutter P000593 perlmutter.house.gov     legacy U.S. Senator Mark Udall and Congressman Ed Perlmutter welcomed news thata federal advisory boardrecommended making it easier for affected Rocky Flats workers to qualify for federal assistance under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness and Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA). The recommendation allows those who worked at Rocky Flats from 1952 to 1983 to qualify for benefits under a "special exposure cohort status." The new classification will alleviate some of the currently burdensome application processes and speed up access to compensation and treatment for health problems stemming from their service. The advisory board's recommendation, which stems from findings by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), now goes to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for approval. "Throughout the Cold War, thousands of workers at Rocky Flats put their health on the line to help the United States prevail. We owe it to them to ensure that they receive the care and compensation they deserve,"Udall said. "I have fought for full and fair compensation for these patriots since 1998, and that's why I am proud that the EEOICPA federal advisory board has moved us one step closer to doing what was needed from the start to grant sick Rocky Flats workers special cohort status so their much needed benefits won't be delayed further. This is a major victory for Colorado's nuclear workers." "For years, Rocky Flats workers have fought for the healthcare and compensation they earned during their service working in dangerous conditions on behalf of our nation,"Perlmutter said. "I applaud NIOSH and the Advisory Board for Radiation and Worker Health for their decision on the Rocky Flats petition and recommending this approval. I encourage NIOSH to continue working to evaluate the remaining Rocky Flats workers not included in this decision, and for the Advisory Board to move quickly to grant all workers at Rocky Flats access to the benefits authorized by Congress. I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress on reforming EEOICPA so nuclear weapons workers across the country can get the healthcare and benefits they deserve." Udall and Perlmutter senta letter earlier this month to the Advisory Board on Radiation and Worker Healthurging it to give "special exposure cohort status" to Rocky Flats workers who were exposed to radioactive and toxic substances during their work at the Cold-War Era plutonium-pit production facility. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
