Republican leaders had introduced numerous bills with the hope of stopping the agreement, negotiated between Iran, the United States and five other countries. "We need peace and security in the Middle East, not another war. This agreement is our best hope at peace and keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of the Iranians. The alternatives are to do nothing and remain in the dark about what Iran is doing or get involved in armed conflict. It's far better that we embrace this plan and work with the other countries who are part of it to make sure Iran complies and doesn't develop nuclear weapons," Pingree said.
