Congressman Poliquin released the following statement: “For more than a half century, our nation has led the world in medical research and innovation,” said Congressman Poliquin. “With the passage of the 21st Century Cures Act, we will continue to make sure that our top medical research institutions, such as Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor and the Mount Desert Island Laboratory, have the tools they need so they can press on in their work and find more cures and treatments to help patients around the globe. I’m especially pleased that provisions were included in this legislation to specifically improve methods for prevention, diagnosis and treatment for tick-borne diseases, like Lyme disease.” “As someone whose family has been personally impacted by the horrific opioid crisis in our State, I’m very pleased this bill will provide critical support to Maine to combat this epidemic. I am working to do everything I can to support our families, community members, health care workers, and law enforcement to help curb this crisis.” The 21st Century Cures Act will help accelerate the discovery, development, and delivery of new treatments and cures for patients across our nation by providing medical researchers with the resources they need and by streamlining and improving the Federal Drug Administration’s (FDA) review of life-saving drugs for patients. Specifically, this bill will provide $4.8 billion of funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Additionally, the bill includes $1 billion for grants to states to combat the opioid crisis.
