Richmond Statement on the Presidents Solitary Confinement Executive Action | 2016-01-26 | 2016 | 2016-01 | Democrat | House | LA | Cedric Richmond | R000588 | richmond.house.gov | legacy | Washington, DC Today, Rep. Richmond (LA-02) issued the following statement after the President ordered changes to how federal prisons use solitary confinement: I have been working to eliminate the abuse of solitary confinement since my time in the Louisiana legislature, said Rep. Richmond. Last summer, I introduced first of its kind legislation calling for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to bring together a panel of stakeholders to study the use of solitary at Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facilities and propose universal standards to end the widespread misuse of the practice. I applaud the President for moving forward with this plan through Executive Action. Because this order can be reversed by future Presidents, a more permanent solution must still come through Congress. I will continue to work with my colleagues on the House Judiciary Committee and the administration to advance legislation that will bring long-term solutions to fix our broken criminal justice system.
