The letter, cosigned by Reps. Bruce Westerman (AR-04), Ben Cline (VA-06), Morgan Griffith (VA-09), and Dan Bishop (NC-09), specifically addresses the DOC'sSection 232 Investigationinto imports of transformer products that could result in tariffs that put U.S. economic competitiveness at risk. "I am proud to send this letter to DOC Secretary Ross to ensure that American manufacturing jobs are protected as the U.S. looks to bolster the national transformer industry, said Congressman Riggleman. The manufacturing industry employs millions of Americans, and there is no reason to impose unnecessary tariffs that would put over 15,000 transformer industry jobs at risk. Access to affordable electricity is a pillar of American life and commerce. We must keep American workers at the forefront of progress as the U.S. continues to dominate the global energy sphere." The letter notes that the imposition of tariffs or other restrictions on imported transformer products would likely result in the following consequences: Loss of jobs in the U.S. Power and Distribution Transformer industries Higher utility/electricity bills which will impact all American consumers Threats to national security through weakening of the competitive structure of the American transformer industry Delays in the critical upgrade of the U.S. electrical grid, which requires procurement by American electric utilities of large numbers of transformers over a short period of time Deterioration of trade, defense and commercial relationships with Canada and Mexico. These relationships are the source of 85% of U.S. imports of transformer cores and laminations, whose electricity grids are physically, strategically and economically linked with the U.S. power grid. Congressman Riggleman is proud to be taking the lead on this letter to ensure U.S. economic competitiveness, secure trade partnerships, and protect jobs.
