Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) today toured Chestnut Health Systems' new 24-hour mental health crisis/medical detoxification unit and hosted a roundtable with members of the health community, law enforcement, and local government to discuss ways we can improve our mental health system. Davis also discussed H.R. 2646, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, which was introduced by U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.), a clinical psychologist, to overhaul our nation's broken mental health system.Whether it's another mass killing or another suicide, which is now the second leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults age 15 to 24, it's clear our country has a mental health crisis that we cannot afford to ignore, said Davis. We are pouring billions of dollars every year into a system that is broken and failing to help those who need it. We need an overhaul which is why I support my colleague, who is the only clinical psychologist in Congress, Congressman Tim Murphy's comprehensive bill to encourage early intervention and prevention, empower families, improve coordination, and increase access to mental health. Davis tours Chestnut Health Systems' new 24-hour mental health crisis/medical detoxification unit with Alan Sender, Chief Operating Officer, and Hannah Hansen, Chestnut Health Systems staff. (Left to Right: Davis; Sender; Miles Chiotti, Congressman Davis staff; Hansen) Davis leads roundtable with members of the health community, law enforcement, and local government to discuss issues facing our mental health system. Background: Despite roughly $130 billion in federal mental health spending every year, our system is broken. We have a nationwide shortage of nearly 100,000 psychiatric beds; our jails, including Cook County, have become our largest mental health hospital; privacy laws generate more than 8,000 complaints each year by physicians and family members; and there is a severe shortage in child psychiatrists (about one for every 2,000 children). Specifically, H.R. 2646, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis, introduced by U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.), a clinical psychologist, to help overhaul our broken mental health system. H.R. 2646 refocuses mental health programs, reforms grants, and removes federal barriers. This bill recently moved through the House Energy and Commerce health subcommittee and could be considered on the House floor soon.
