Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) today released the following statement after the House voted to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from implementing rules impacting new and existing coal-fired power plants.Last week, I visited coal plants and spoke with miners in my district who are afraid of losing their jobs because of regulations coming out of Washington, said Davis. These new rules put every one of those jobs in jeopardy. I also saw last week that the industry has made great strides in the technology used to safely burn coal and reduce emissions. We need an all-of-the-above energy strategy that includes coal and will allow our economy to grow and create good-paying jobs. On October 23, as part of the president's Climate Action Plan, the EPA finalized new rules limiting the carbon dioxide emissions from new and existing coal-fired power plants. A study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) found that these new carbon emission rules would more than double the number of coal plants slated to close by 2040. S. J. Res. 24 would nullify the EPA's rule regarding existing coal-fired power plants and S. J. Res. 23 would prevent the regulations on new plants. Both bills passed the Senate earlier this month and now head to the president's desk. Last week, Davis toured Shay Mine No. 1 near Carlinville, met with United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) in Springfield, and toured Abbott Power Plant, which is a coal-fired power plant that powers the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
