https://rodneydavis.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=399534 Ahead of National Day of Giving, Davis Announces Bill to Provide Stable Funding for Food Banks 2017-11-21 2017 2017-11 Republican House IL Rodney Davis D000619 rodneydavis.house.gov     legacy Davis speaks with Jim Hires, CEO of Eastern Illinois Food, during a visit to the food bank ahead of National Day of Giving. U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) today, ahead of National Day of Giving (Nov. 28), visited Eastern Illinois Foodbank to announce legislation to provide stable funding for food banks. “This is certainly one of the busiest times of year for our food banks, but they face the challenge of helping feed those who are hungry every day,” said Davis. “By making this distribution funding mandatory, food banks, like Eastern Illinois Foodbank, will be able to make these private donations go further. It was great to see their operations ahead of National Day of Giving, which they raised over $140,000 or 700,000 meals for those in need last year. I appreciate the work of Jim Hires and all of the staff at Eastern Illinois Foodbank and I look forward to celebrating their success again this year.” “We are sincerely grateful for Congressman Davis’ leadership in sponsoring the Food Bank Assistance Act,” said Jim Hires, CEO of the Eastern Illinois Foodbank. “This legislation, when enacted, will increase the amount of food available to food insecure families and individuals and allow food banks, like the Eastern Illinois Foodbank, to better serve their rural communities in a more cost effective and timely manner.” H.R. 4020, the Food Bank Assistance Act, would make food bank distribution funding within the farm bill mandatory spending and increase the funding for Emergency Food Assistance Program to $500 million. Currently, the Farm Bill authorizes $100 million a year for food banks to distribute food, however, the distribution money is usually whittled down to about $50 million because it is not required spending. Davis and fellow House Agriculture Committee member, U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) introduced H.R. 4020 last month and are hoping to include it in the 2018 Farm Bill.
