U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) announced today that the National Park Service (NPS) has agreed to conduct a preliminary survey of the site of the 1908 Springfield Race Riots. The survey is necessary to begin the process of getting a national designation by the park service. Davis also spoke with the Secretary of the Interior this week who committed to working with him throughout this process. This is a significant step forward in getting the national recognition I believe the Springfield Race Riot site deserves, said Davis. I appreciate Secretary Zinke's recognition of the importance of this site to our nation's history and his commitment to working with us as this process moves forward. I look forward to working with the city, the NAACP, and the National Park Service as they conduct the survey next year. Davis wrote the NPS back in October requesting the reconnaissance survey.
