Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after voting for the Fiscal Year 2020National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)Conference Report: I am proud to support the 2020 NDAA Conference Report. This legislation builds upon our efforts to rebuild and strengthen our military at home and overseas with an overall defense budget of $738 billion. Included in this bill is the largest and a well deserved pay raise in a decade for our servicemembers at 3.1 percent. I've also long been troubled by the suicide crisis affecting our servicemembers, and encouraged by the work of innovative organizations like Guard Your Buddy in Tennessee, which seems to be making real progress in helping National Guard and reserve servicemembers who are in crisis. I'm very pleased this bill includes language that will encourage the Guard to undertake a pilot program aimed at assisting members of the National Guard with additional suicide prevention efforts. Additionally, the removal of so-called widow's tax,' which prevented nearly 60,000 widows and widowers since the 1970's, from receiving their full survivor benefits from the Department of Defense because they were being offset by survivor benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, is welcome news and long overdue. In short, the passage of the 2020 NDAA is a win for our servicemembers and their families across the nation, and I hope to see this bill delivered to the President's desk without delay. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
