Dana Rohrabacher, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats, today released the following statement: It has been reported that President Trump, in a telephone conversation with Turkey’s President Erdogan, indicated a willingness to stop American arms shipments to Kurdish fighters. The United States has already backed away from Kurds in Iraq who are fighting Iranian-backed militias. In fact, the Kurds for many years have been our most courageous allies in the struggle against radical Islam. Our policy should be to support friends, not betray them. The U.S. appears to be currying favor with an enemy by betraying a friend. Making the situation even more indefensible, we are placating Erdogan, who is taking Turkey down the road to Islamic dictatorship, inevitably putting it in the ranks of the terrorists. The Kurds have been a major force against radical Islamic terrorism. It is unconscionable to abandon them. Compounding the immorality, we are abandoning those Kurds with whom we fought in common cause in Syria.
