Congressman Tom Rooney today introduced the Congressional Citrus Caucus for the 114th Congress. The Congressional Citrus Caucus will provide a forum for Members of Congress and their staff to discuss current challenges and avenues to pursue potential areas of positive federal support for our nations citrus industry. Rooneys home state of Florida is the largest producer of oranges in the United States accounting for about 70 percent of the nations total production. The state of Florida produces more oranges than any other region of the world, with the exception of Brazil. In the state there are more than 8,000 citrus growers cultivating over half a million acres of Floridas land solely devoted to citrus. The industry also supports over 75,000 jobs that are either directly or indirectly related to citrus. Im proud to introduce the Congressional Citrus Caucus for this session of Congress, Rooney said. Floridas citrus industry provides billions of dollars to our economy and tens of thousands of jobs to Floridians. This years USDA crop estimates for Florida are the lowest since the 1964 and they are still declining. Im hopeful that the Congressional Citrus Caucus will provide a forum for Members from across the country to come together to help our nations citrus industry flourish.
