Congressman Tom Rooney issued the following statement after last nights filing of the Tax Increase Prevention and Real Estate Investment Act of 2015 by Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady, commonly referred to as tax extenders. Chairman Brady filed a bill last night which would extend tax provisions for the upcoming year. Included in this bill is language that Rooney has pushed regarding bonus depreciation; Rooneys concern on this issue is how bonus depreciation pertains to citrus farmers. Floridas citrus industry has been plagued with citrus greening disease for more than a decade. Bradys bill includes provisions to help any farmers who tend to fruit and nut bearing trees, which includes citrus trees. The proposed bill would allow farmers to immediately depreciate their costs of planting new trees and substantially reduce the financial risk that comes with the investment. Current law prevents cost depreciation until the grove produces income, which can take years. The state of Florida has over 130,000 acres of abandoned commercial citrus groves, according to officials. Rooney has long supported this language in the hopes that this will help citrus growers invest in their own groves and help the citrus industry in Florida flourish. I am very pleased and encouraged to see that the language I, and other Florida delegation members, requested to be included in the end of the year tax extenders package was included in the draft filed last night, Rooney said.
