Congressman Tom Rooney has secured $7.5 million in funding to fight citrus greening disease in the 2016 Consolidated Appropriations Bill that was passed by the House of Representatives today. Rooney has fought long and hard for the citrus industry since he was elected in 2008. Rooney, one of the only members of the Florida delegation to sit on the prestigious House Appropriations Committee, is the sole Florida member on the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee. In that capacity, he worked to include specific directives and funding supporting citrus disease research in the 2016 funding bill. This includes the $7.5 million that was incorporated into the final bill to sustain the Huanglongbing Multiagency Coordination Groups (HLB-MAC) recent research gains in early detection, greening management strategies, and therapies to treat infected trees. Chairman of the Appropriations Committee Rep. Hal Rogers (R-KY) applauded Rooney for his work on the issue. Congressman Rooney worked diligently to help ensure this funding was included in the final bill, Rogers said. He has been a strong voice in Congress, specifically on the Appropriations Committee, on behalf of Floridas citrus industry, and I am pleased we could address this critical issue in this spending bill. Chairman of the Subcommittee on Agriculture Rep. Robert Aderholt (AL-04) joined in commending Rooney for his work. I appreciate Congressman Rooneys tireless dedication to the citrus industry and being such a good advocate for Floridas citrus in Congress, Aderholt said. Ultimately finding a cure for citrus greening is critical for maintaining an abundant and affordable food supply for the entire nation, and securing this funding is an important step to finding a cure. I have always stressed how important it is for us to invest the necessary funds to finding a cure for citrus greening before the American citrus industry becomes a thing of the past, Rooney said. This $7.5 million is more than we could have hoped for. I am pleased that the negotiators recognized how essential this funding is and included it in the final bill.
