Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman Emeritus of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, made the following statement in response to the designation of Roberto Rivas, president of Nicaraguas Supreme Electoral Council, for human rights violations and acts of corruption under the authorities provided by the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. Earlier this month, Ros-Lehtinen led a bipartisan, bicameral letter to the administration asking for Rivas to be sanctioned under this Act. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: Earlier this month, I led a bicameral, bipartisan letter to the administration urging it to consider Rivas, president of Nicaraguas Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), and Francisco Lopez, vice-president of ALBANISA, for designation under the Global Magnitsky Act. Today, the administration took an important step in issuing its first set of designations under the Global Magnitsky Act, which included Rivas name on the list. The magnitude of corruption and fraud orchestrated by Rivas is both well documented and well deserving of these sanctions. Im encouraged that the administration is taking decisive action in support of the people of Nicaragua, but this must be the first step rather than the last. I hope that in the next round of sanctions, the administration designates Lopez for his role in the erosion of the democratic institutions in Nicaragua and for his violations of the rights of the Nicaraguan people. Global Magnitsky is just one tool for the administration to use to curb human rights abuses in Nicaragua and to hold the Ortega regime accountable. Earlier this year, the House passed another measure a bill I authored, the NICA Act which would provide yet another tool for the administration to meet these objectives. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to take up this measure and send it to the Presidents desk so that we can send a powerful message to Ortega and his cronies that these abuses will not be allowed to continue without consequences. NOTE: Reps. Ros-Lehtinen and Albio Sires (D-NJ) sent a bicameral, bipartisan letter to the administration on December 1, 2017, urging the Department of State and the Department of Treasury to investigate Roberto Rivas and Francisco Lopez and determine whether they met criteria to be sanctioned under Global Magnitsky. They were also joined in this letter by Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Bill Nelson (D-FL), and Reps.
